I received an all expense paid trip from Disney to attend the #Cars3Event. The opinions expressed here are my own and I received no monetary compensation. #PuppyDogPalsEvent #ABCTVEvent #TheToyBox #BornInChina
Cars 3 races into theaters on June 16th and we couldn’t be more excited to see Lightening McQueen back in action! As the sounds of race cars zoomed by at the Sonoma Raceway, we heard from Brian Fee (Director), Kevin Reher (Producer) Andrea Warren (Producer) at the Cars 3 press junket. You can read more about my trip to Pixar, the history of racing, the story behind Cars 3 and a look at the animation for more Cars 3 insight. Here are 5 things I learned about the making of the film from the director and producers.
1. OBSTACLE TO OVERCOME
Before the project started, the writers knew that they needed for McQueen to face an obstacle of some sort. Fee mentioned that they spoke with Jeff Gordon and other athletes were were once at the top of their game and are now facing the expiration date that all athletes have. He said, “I think everybody in the world probably has that feeling that they know what it’s like for someone younger to come in and…you start to feel like you are no longer valid anymore. So [it] seemed like an honest thing to latch onto”.

2. THE VOICE OF MCQUEEN
Before Owen Wilson (voice of McQueen) goes into the sound booth, they experiment with “scratch acting” with people in studio to see what works and what doesn’t. Fee said that once Owen starts recording, that he also gives his input about what McQueen would say or wouldn’t say in a certain scene. Often what was on the page is transformed once the actor gets behind the voice. In animation, Fee said that’s the closest to improv you can get.

3. FOLLOWING IN JOHN LASSETER’S FOOTSTEPS
Lasseter directed the first two Cars films and Fee stated that they met with him regularly about the third film. Lasseter took on a mentor role over Cars 3, while letting them do their thing. Fee stated,”[Lasseter] allowed me to play with his toys, so to speak. And I needed to hold tight to these characters that he created”. He also said that he realized that the world was attached to these characters and had certain expectations that he took into account.

4. THE MESSAGE OF THE MOVIE
Fee said that the main takeaway of the movie, for him, is finding purpose in life. Fee spoke to valuing things differently when your in your twenties versus when you’re in your forties and adapting to that change. Fee stated, “We go through these changes where life [has] new meaning and that’s the discovery [McQueen] is on”.

5. WHAT MAKES CARS 3 DIFFERENT
The film makers expanded the world of Cars 3, through new characters and situations. Fee said, “We don’t want to just go back to the same place and do the same things again”. This movie is relatable to a multi-generation audience, with the older generation being able to identify with McQueen and the younger generation being able to identify with Cruz Ramirez and her desire to fit in. Cars 3 also has more race scenes than the previous films.
Cars 3 races into theaters on June 16th, mark those calendars!
